Youth Entering the Forestry Career Sector Supported Through Mentorship

Project Learning Tree (PLT Canada) believes in a society that values and benefits from sustainably managed forests and the great outdoors. PLT Canada is committed to engaging youth in learning about the world around them – in rural, Indigenous, and urban communities – and advancing environmental literacy, stewardship and career pathways using trees and forests as windows to the world. As a premier provider of forest-related education, training and advocacy, PLT Canada has created a multi-purpose platform for mentoring programs.

The Challenge

PLT Canada wanted to increase the number and diversity of young people entering the forest sector, while helping future leaders access career support, coaching, and industry connections.

The program needed to be accessible across Canada, including for youth in remote regions where meeting mentors in their field could be difficult.

Our Solution

Pollinate worked with PLT Canada to create a virtual mentorship program tailored to the needs of youth entering forestry and conservation careers.

The program included custom intake, strategic mentor matching, mentor and mentee training, career development learning materials, expert webinars, and Pollinate’s mentorship education content.

The Results

Participants were matched for a six-month virtual mentoring experience using criteria such as goals, location, interests, learning styles, skills, and expertise.

The program achieved strong outcomes: 96% of respondents rated their satisfaction 7 or higher out of 10, 92% met with their mentor or mentee at least four times, and 96% felt they received enough training and support to be successful.
